CDC Meeting Minutes 02/07/2002
MEETING OF THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
Thursday, February 7th, 2002 Marbletown Town Hall
CDC members present: Carl Pezzino, Dan Gagnon, Roger Wells, Tom Jackson, Susan Benz (acting as secretary), Mary Ranges, Jim Economos, Amy Moses, Tim Sweeney, Marge Gagnon.
Guests and subcommittee members: Bruce Daveneport, Steve Rice, Lou Cardinale, David Wyncoop, Eunice Shumalski.
The meeting was called to order by Carl Pezzino at 7:05pm
I. Marbletown Tri-Centennial 2003 Carl P. facilitated a discussion of ideas for planning a tri-centennial celebration for 2003. He suggested that the CDC initiate the creation of a committee of community members (not a CDC subcommittee). He showed the Marbletown booklet published in 1977 and explained the formation of Marbletown, and Marbletown shield and motto. The following ideas were discussed:
A. Jim Economos suggested items that could be manufactured by Imperial Schrade for use as fund raising tools: knives, money clips, belt buckles  all with the town seal.
B. Possible fundraiser tie-ins: tractor pull, library fair, arts and culture event.
C. Celebration ideas:
1. A First Night event to kick off the year, possibly New Years or July.
This could be extended throughout the town (community center, SR Center for the Arts, Marbletown School, Restaurants, Library etc.)
2. A year-long celebration covering many events  i.e. weave tri-centennial
concept into various events spread over time.
D. Town seal or logo should appear throughout.
E. A meeting will take place on March 23rd at UCCC to kick-off planning. An ad-hoc committee of various group members could be formed then to coordinate and report back to CDC. Groups could plan own events, with own budgets etc.
F. Eunice S. suggested contacting Ulster County Tourism office for support.
II. CDC Subcommittee Review and Adjustments Carl reviewed ideas for new subcommittee appointments and chairs. A new Emergency Services subcommittee has been created.
A. Arts and Culture: Chair: Bruce Littlefield. Les Cohen, Rev. Rob Magliula.
B. Economic: Chair: Dan Gagnon. Sue Benz, Karen Williams.
C. Infrastructure: Chair: Marshall Borris. Roger Wells, James Reynolds, Doug Wolf.
D. Community Center: Co-Chairs: Mary Ranges and Marge Gagnon.
Cate Evonich, Dave Wyncoop, Brooke Pickering.
E. Natural Resources: Chair: Bruce Davenport, Fabia Wargin, Tim Sweeney.
F. Trails: Co-Chairs: Steve Rice and Eunice Shumalski. Amy Moses.
G. Emergency Services: Chair: Lou Cardinale. Tom Jackson, Jim Economos.
III. Subcommittee Reports A. Arts and Culture
Carl P. reported for Bruce Littlefield based on the A&C subcommittee memo
(attached).
B. Community Center
1. Construction update: Dave W. reported that they are shooting for a March 16th opening of the building. Events are hard to plan as water problems have continued to create difficulties.
2. Donations: many donations have been made including the following:
The American Legion  the building; Imperial Schrade  flagpole; A&G Custom Cabinets  Counter tops; Ed Croswell  backhoe work; Eastern Correctional Trustees  painting etc.; Emmanuels  lunch for Trustees;
Herzog lumber Co.  Lumber; Wheaties  furniture; John Harvis 
roofing; Nibble Nook  lunch for Trustees; Twiggys; lunch for Trustees;
Jim Terwilliger; kitchen sink.
3. Not for profit status: the Community Center will pursue non-profit
status. The Town will provide funds for the process which the
Community Center will repay (all but $250) through future fundraising.
In the meantime it was suggested that the Town could set up a trust fund
for funneling donations to the CC.
Jim Economos said that Imperial Schrade can donate community
center T-shirts for fund raiser.
4. Cate Evonich has been hired as Teen Director.
5. A $500 grant has been applied for from Healthy Heart Coalition.
6. A grand opening reception is being planned for March 30th.
C. Economic
The MBA will pay the entire cost of the kiosk and will be reimbursed for $2000 (of the total $4000 cost) from the Town. MBA has appointed a kiosk subcommittee to oversee the project.
D. Infrastructure
Tom Jackson submitted a computer generated plan by Ulster County Planning Dept. of a possible streetscape for part of Stone Ridge. Includes buried power lines, traffic light at rt. 213 west, sidewalks. Also addresses potential problems. A copy was given to Dan Shuster.
1. Lou C. suggested an idea for replacing the State Marbletown highway signs with new attractive town signs with tri-centennial and seal on them. He will pursue this idea with county and state.
E. Natural Resources
The Our Bounty column is running in the Blue Stone Press. Scenic Byway will be contacted for a possible contribution.
F. Trails
1. The leggett/213 connection is continuing to be addressed.
2. The subcommittee is trying to interest law enforcement in ATV problem.
3. Eunice will arrange for the alliance of trails group to come to a CDC meeting in April.
IV. Miscellaneous
Marge Gagnon announced that Save a Life Saturday will be at UCCC on April 14th. CPR training will be offered.
The next meeting will be on March 14th at 7pm at UCCC in the St. Johns conference center in the Clinton building.
The meeting adjourned at 9:10pm
