Board of Ethics
The Marbletown Board of Ethics is appointed by the Town Board to administer the Marbletown Code of Ethics, adopted into law in 2021 and updated most recently in 2022. The Code of Ethics is an important part of Town governance, designed to support ethical decision-making on behalf of the Town, free from personal and professional conflicts of interest.
The Board is made up of local residents who receive no compensation for their service. The Board may not include a majority of town employees or officers and is nonpartisan, with a required balance of political parties.
The Board of Ethics oversees the administration of the annual conflict of interest disclosure process and reports findings from the process to the Town Board. The Board also oversees a process by which concerned citizens may file complaints under the Code of Ethics, and is available to provide advisory opinions to Town officials and employees, administer ethics complaints, consider conflict management plans, and make recommendations to the Town Board on ethical matters and matters pertaining to the Code of Ethics. The opinions of the Board of Ethics are advisory and confidential.
Meetings
The Board of Ethics meets in person several times each year, as needed. While the agendas of the Board’s meetings are posted on the Town Website, by law, the Board’s meetings are confidential. The Board is able to invite people to attend a meeting if the Board requires testimony or information. All conflict of interest disclosure forms and information related to complaints filed under the Code are confidential, but may be subject to the rules for public disclosures under New York State and other similar laws.
